A second big category of damage type we see on coins is fingerprints. The oils and acids present on one's hands can damage coins if left on the surface of the coin for an extended time. Initially, they can cause a fingerprint pattern toned area that is unattractive and lowers the value and grade of the coin. Left unattended, these oils and acids can eventually etch the surface of the coin making the fingerprint permanent. Even handling coins by their rims still allows the dangerous compounds onto the rims of the coins. Using a pair of soft cotton gloves when handling raw coins helps protect all three surfaces of the coins. Make sure you get a pair of thin gloves so that you can still feel the coin. Bulky work gloves make it harder to handle small items and increases the risk of dropping the coin.

One of the reasons there is such a disparity between what the average consumer expects, and what the coin dealer actually delivers when it comes to buying coins from the public is that coin dealers see vast amounts of common "junk." By "junk" I mean common date wheat pennies, circulated Buffalo Nickels and Mercury Dimes, worn Washington Quarters and circulated Franklin and Kennedy Halves. Coin dealers are offered so much of this type of material that many of them get tired of seeing it. They give such material the cursory once-over and offer low-ball prices for it based on long experience. Usually people have already pulled out the more valuable coins, leaving the "junk," (or at least the the dealer must assume so.)

Every coin dealer has horror stories about a non-collector who comes into his shop with a box of shiny old coins. Most of the time, the coins have no numismatic (collector) value at all; they are just old but common coins. But occasionally, a rare former beauty is found in the mix. It's a former beauty because whatever value it once had has been scraped off by an excited finder and a jar of silver polish. The coin, which might have been worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, is now all but worthless.
