I personally have mixed emotions about prooflike gold coins. Due to the fact that gold is a soft metal, the surfaces tend to easily pick up marks, nicks and scratches and these tend to be strongly amplified by deep, reflective fields. Unless a Prooflike gold coin is a Gem, it tends to have a scruffy appearance and may have compromised eye appeal as a result.

Among my top five worst coin investments are modified coins, such as genuine U.S. Mint products that have been altered by adding holographics or coloring. These coins are generally considered "damaged" by serious coin collectors, and you will only get the bullion value when you go to sell them, if that. I have heard of dealers discounting them because of the added impurities that the paint and other crap applied to the coins adds to the metal.
According to many experts, the best type of investment coins are rarer, key date coins issued by the United States, in the best grade you can afford to buy them in. If you can't afford to shell out $2,000 a coin to buy key dates in high grades, then buy common coins in the finest grades you can. Lower grade, common coins have historically not appreciated as much in value as key date coins do, so they are probably not a good investment choice (although they're great for filling up the holes in albums, especially with kids helping out!)

When it comes to hand lenses, four or five powers of magnification seem to be the norm for many collectors. At these powers, an entire coin may be viewed all at once, which is especially useful when grading. Nevertheless, unless you are an experienced numismatist, you will not be able to see characteristics such as metal flow, die doubling, and counterfeit diagnostics on many coins when using minimal magnification. The micrograph shows the head detail of a genuine 1861-O CSA Obverse Seated half dollar. This view is close to what you would expect to see when using a 10� hand lens.

As a member of Toastmasters (toastmasters.org), I am always on the lookout for metaphors that I can use when giving speeches. As a numismatist, I like when those metaphors include references to coins. So I really enjoyed the metaphor I came across while reading an article in the UK's Daily Mail:
"The brief flash of truth shone out like a gold coin on a dunghill."
Although the article has nothing to do with numismatics, the metaphor is one that I'm sure I'll find a use for in the future. Here's a link to the article if you are interested: Link
